Gavin holds a BA, LLB and H Dip. Tax from Wits University. He was admitted as an Attorney in the Supreme Court of SA in 1988.
After practicing as an attorney with Dichmont and Dichmont, he joined Arthur Andersen in 1989 in their Tax and Legal division.
In 1995, Gavin co-founded Mettle Financial Services, working as head of structured finance and became a director in 1997 and CEO in 1999. The company was listed on the JSE in 2002. As CEO, he focused the business primarily on acquisitions and concluded approximately 12 such deals, which included the largest mobile crane company in Southern Africa, a tile adhesive business, a 250-strong bus company and a large property company. Gavin served on all these boards, mostly in the position as chairman.
In 2006 Gavin resigned from Mettle to pursue his own private equity interests. His portfolio today includes residential property, agriculture, food manufacturing and food services companies. These employ in excess of 2000 people. He currently serves on approximately 20 operating boards, mostly in a leadership position.
